Agricultural machinery

AGCO Corporation is an agricultural equipment manufacturer based in Duluth, Georgia. It was formed in 1990 when executives at Deutz-Allis bought out Deutz-Allis' North American operations from KHD, Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz, a German company that owned the Deutz-Fahr brand of agriculture equipment. The new company was first called Gleaner-Allis Corporation, then rearranged to be Allis-Gleaner Corporation, or AGCO. The design for these tractors and combines were originally designed by Allis-Chalmers Corp prior to the sellout to Deutz-Allis.The Deutz-Allis line of tractors were renamed Agco-Allis, and Gleaner became a brand of its own for combines. The Deutz-Allis brand continued in South America until 2001, when they were renamed Agco-Allis. They continue in the lime-green livery. ...more on Wikipedia about "AGCO Corporation"

An auger is a device for moving material or liquid by means of a rotating helical flighting. The material is moved along the axis of rotation. A drill bit uses this mechanism to remove shavings from a hole being drilled. For some uses the helical flighting is enclosed in a tube, for other uses the flighting is not encased. ...more on Wikipedia about "Auger"

The Auster B8 Agricola was a commerically unsuccessful British agricultural aircraft designed for the aerial topdressing market which opened up in New Zealand in the early 1950s. Constructed of fabric over corrosion proofed steel frame the design featured a large high lift low set monoplane wing, external control cables, fixed tail wheel undercarriage and a somewhat angular fuselage, with an aft cabin that could seat two pasengers, a hopper over the centre of the wing which could hold 750 kg of superphosphate in the topdressing role, or 654 litres of spray as a crop duster. The pilot sat forward of the hopper over the wing leading edge, a position which gave a good field of view compared with the American practise of placing the pilot behind the hopper, though this view was somewhat restricted by the extensive canopy joinery and bulky rear decking. The Agricola's handling was generally described favourably, particularly it's slow speed performance and controls, while its rugged and simple construction allowed for easy maintenance and repair. The aircraft was utilitarian rather than attractive; one web site has short-listed the Agricola in a competition for the ugliest aircraft of all time. The type was first flown in 1955. It was out competed in its target market by the PAC Fletcher and attempts to sell the type for Aerial application work in Britain, Australia and Europe met with little success. Only 9 were made before production ceased. Of these ZK-BXO, is the sole survivor. Restored by John Stephenson of Whitianga, it was operated for many years by him as both historic aircraft and personal transport. BXO was sold to the U.K. in 2005. ...more on Wikipedia about "Auster Agricola"

The history of combining and the story of this technology can be found in the book Dream Reaper by Craig Canine. ...more on Wikipedia about "Bi-Rotor"

The reaper-binder, or binder, was a farm implement that improved upon the reaper. The binder was invented in 1872 by Charles Withington. In addition to cutting the small-grain crop, it would also tie the stems into small bundles, or sheaves. These sheaves were then 'shocked' into conical stooks, resembling small tipis, to allow the grain to dry for several days before being threshed. ...more on Wikipedia about "Binder"

A cherry picker is a device used in orchards, and not just cherry orchards. Cherry pickers are hydraulic lifting systems on the back of a large vehicle, like a truck, or sometimes a stand-alone trailer. At the top is a bucket that the worker stands in. It lets the picker pick fruit high in the tree with relative ease. Cherry pickers are also used to service telephone, cable television and electrical equipment on utility poles. Also, some fire trucks have a cherry picker instead of a fire ladder, and some window cleaners also use them. ...more on Wikipedia about "Cherry picker"

District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis has decided to uphold an earlier decision not to prosecute the owners of two ranches where workers threw about 30,000 live chickens into wood chippers. She decided that brothers Arie and Bill Wilgenburg were not acting maliciously when they instructed workers to toss the hens into the wood chippers in 2003. They had followed the advice of two veterinarians to euthanize the diseased chickens. The American Veterinary Medical Association is adamantly opposed to the practice. ...more on Wikipedia about "Chick blender"

The chisel plow is a common tool to get deep tillage with limited soil disruption. The main function of this plow is to loosen and aerate the soils while leaving crop residue at the top of the soil. This plow can be used to reduce the effects of compaction and to help break up plowpan and hardpan. Unlike many other plows the chisel will not invert or turn the soil. This characteristic has made it a useful addition to no-till and limited-tillage farming practices which attempt to maximize the erosion prevention benefits of keeping organic matter and farming residues present on the soil surface through the year. Because of these attributes, the use of a chisel plow is considered by some to be more sustainable than other types of plow, such as the moldboard plow. ...more on Wikipedia about "Chisel plow"

The combine harvester, or simply combine, is a machine that harvests, threshes, and cleans grain plants. The current cotton picker is a self-propelled machine that removes cotton lint and seed (seed-cotton) from the plant at up to six rows at a time. It uses rows of spindles that rotate at high speed and remove the seed-cotton from the plant. The seed-cotton is then removed from the spindles by a counter-rotating doffer and is then blown up into a basket located on the picker. Once the basket is full the picker dumps the seedcotton into a "module builder". The module builder creates a compacter "brick" of seed-cotton which can be stored in the field or in the "gin yard" until it is ginned. ...more on Wikipedia about "Cotton picker"
