The alternative information centres were a feature of the anarcho-pacifist attempt at social engineering from the bottom up which took place from the late 1960s to the mid- 1970s and which was referred to as the alternative society. One of these centres was in West London and was called Bit, a name which came from the computer usage of the term. Another centre was in east London and was called simply East. Individualist anarchism, while being advocated among some European philosophers in various forms, has a distinctive flavor in The United States of America. American individualist anarchism is sometimes regarded as a form of "liberal-anarchism" by those who see it is a radicalized version of classical liberalism ( American Liberal-Anarchism ), while a few collectivist and individualist anarchists refer to classical individualism as a form of socialism ** ** , although, it is not socialism in the sense of collective ownership of the means of production as is commonly defined today ** . The most famous individualist anarchist, Benjamin Tucker refers to his philosophy as "unterrified Jeffersonianism." The individualists adhere to a labor theory of value and therefore find profit in trade to be exploitation that is made possible by coercive "monopolies," backed or created by the state, which reduce competition. Despite the rejection of capitalism (in the sense of a profit-making system) by classical individualists, anarcho-capitalists who adopt the subjective theory of value have no such opposition to profit. Some anarcho-capitalists, such as Wendy McElroy, refer to themselves simply as "individualist anarchists." However, the term is usually used in reference to the classical individualists, and its use by anarcho-capitalists is highly contentious. Amparo Poch y Gascón was a Spanish anarchist, doctor, and activist in the years leading up to and during the Spanish Civil War, was one of the founding members of the Mujeres Libres and was appointed director of social assistance at the Ministry of Health and Social Assistance by Federica Montseny. She was responsible for organizing the Mujeres Libres in Barcelona and used her government position to promote the establishment of liberatorios de prostitución (liberation homes for prostitutes, where prostitutes could receive health care, psychotherapy and professional training to enable them to acquire economic independence through socially acceptable means). While she sought to address the economic conditions that drove women into prostitution, her attitude towards prostitutes was paternalistic, viewing them as individuals to be saved, and this view was reflected in the program of the liberatorios. She worked to promote awareness about women's sexuality and advocated for sexual freedom and against monogamy and the sexual double standard. Unlike her co-founders in the Mujeres Libres, Lucía Sánchez Saornil and Mercedes Comaposada, she had been a member of the reformist treintista CNT before the war. She held a more essentialist view of women's nature, appealing to women as mothers and embracing motherhood as a natural, feminine state. Anarchists traditionally have been skeptical and opposed to organized religion. Most organized religions are hierarchical in nature and, more often than not, aligned with contemporary power structures like state and capital. This does not mean that anarchists are in opposition to personal faith, only to the perceived authoritarian nature of organized religion. Like much of the rest of Europe, Medieval England was ruled by a limited monarch in coalition with a parliament of wealthy aristocrats and landowners. Unlike continental Europe, the parliament of the rich maintained its rights and privileges. When the English monarchy sought to establish absolute monarchy, the English parliament rebelled. During this civil war dissenting protestants and rural workers began forming utopian communities based on common ownership of the tools of production. This revolts can be distinguished from medieval revolts like Wat Tyler's on the basis that they occurred inside a commodified production system. (See Christopher Hill, Century of Revolution). As a result of this Civil War, the English aristocratic and capitalist ruling classes united behind Parliament. Anarchist economics entails theory and practice relating to economic activity within the philosophical outlines of anarchism. Anarchists primarily oppose capitalism because its characteristic institutions including hierarchical production relations, collecting rents from private property, taking a profit in exchanges, and collecting interest on loans, promote and reproduce various forms of oppression. Anarchist terrorism is the use of terrorism to further anarchist causes. Anarchists have often been portrayed as dangerous and violent, due partly to a number of high-profile violent acts including riots, assassinations, and insurrections attributed (sometimes falsely) to anarchists, mainly in the late 19th century and the early 20th century.
