Anniversaries

An anniversary (from the Latin anniversarius, from the words for year and to turn, meaning (re)turning yearly; known in English since c1230) is a day that commemorates and/or celebrates a past event that occurred on the same day of the year as the initial event. For example, the first event is the initial occurance or, if planned, the inaugural of the event; 365 days (plus a possible leap day) or one year later, would be the first anniversary of that event. The word was first used for the Christan feasts to commemorate the saints. Similar words are used for different time periods (e.g. a "one month anniversary", see mensiversary). ...more on Wikipedia about "Anniversary"

Armistice Day is the anniversary of the official end of World War I, November 11, 1918. It commemorates the armistice signed between the Allies and Germany at Compiègne, France, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front, which took effect at eleven o'clock in the morning — the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month." While this official date to mark the end of the war reflects the ceasefire on the Western Front, hostilities continued in other regions, especially across the former Russian Empire and in parts of the old Ottoman Empire. ...more on Wikipedia about "Armistice Day"
