It is usually constructed on an existing reef or may be an expansion of a small natural islet. Traditional artificial islands are created by land reclamation. Some recent developments have been constructed more in the manner of oil platforms, but whether these structures should be considered islands is not universally agreed. Barro Colorado Island is a 1,500-hectare artificial island located in the Gatun Lake portion of the Panama Canal. The island is a protected site dedicated to the study of lowland moist tropical forests. Together with five adjacent peninsulas, BCI forms the 5,400-hectare Barro Colorado Nature Monument (BCNM), which is located in the middle of the Panama Canal . Established in April 17, 1923, BCNM and has been administered by the Smithsonian since 1946. The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute has a permanent research center in the island, dedicated to studying the rainforest ecosystem.
