Ashland is a city located in Ashland County, Ohio. It was formerly known as Uniontown, but because of another city named Uniontown in Ohio, the city was compelled to adopt a new name. Ashland was recommended as a name by congressman Henry Clay, after the name of his ranch in Kentucky. Later, "Henry Clay High School" was considered as a name for what is now known as Ashland High School. In the mid-1800's, Ashland pioneers traveled to Oregon and named the settlement there Ashland, Oregon. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 21,249. It is the county seat of Ashland County , and the center of the Ashland Micropolitan Statistical Area (as defined by the United States Census Bureau in 2003). It was incorporated in 1916.
