By royal descent, he is a member of the Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg line of the House of Oldenburg. His family always uses the surname de Grecia (of Greece). His titles, Crown Prince of Greece, Prince of Denmark, and Duke of Sparta, although used as courtesy titles among European royalty and in the media generally, are not recognized in the Hellenic Republic, which abolished the monarchy in 1974. Hyginus was Pope from about 138 to about 140. He was born in Athens, Greece. During his papacy, he determined the different prerogarives of the clergy, and defined the grades of the ecclesiastical hierarchy. Hyginus instituted godparents at baptism to assist the newly born during their Christian life. He also decreed that all churches be consecrated.
