Biodiversity

Agricultural biodiversity is a sub-set of general biodiversity involving commercially grown crops. Many believe it is threatened by globalisation of food markets and tastes, intellectual property systems and the spread of unsustainable industrial food production including GMOs. However, it provides the basis of the food security and livelihood security and underpins the development of all food production. It is the first link in the food chain, developed and safeguarded by farmers, livestock breeders, forest workers, fishermen and indigenous peoples throughout the world. ...more on Wikipedia about "Agricultural biodiversity"

Alpha diversity (α-diversity) is the biodiversity within a particular area, community or ecosystem, and is measured by counting the number of taxa within the ecosystem (usually species). ...more on Wikipedia about "Alpha diversity"

The Convention on Biological Diversity is an international treaty that was adopted at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. The Convention has three main goals: ...more on Wikipedia about "Convention on Biological Diversity"

The International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, popularly known as the International Seed Treaty, is a comprehensive international agreement in harmony with Convention on Biological Diversity, which aims at guaranteeing food security through the conservation, exchange and sustainable use of the world's plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, as well as the fair and equitable benefit sharing arising from its use. It also recognises Farmers’ Rights to freely access genetic resources, unrestricted by intellectual property rights, to be involved in relevant policy discussions and decision making, and to use, save, sell and exchange seeds, in accordance to national laws. ...more on Wikipedia about "International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture"

The Shannon-Wiener Index (also called the Shannon Index or the Shannon-Weaver Index) H^{\prime} is one of several diversity indices used to measure biodiversity. The advantage of this index is that it takes into account the number of species and the evenness of the species. The index is increased either by having more unique species, or by having a greater species evenness. ...more on Wikipedia about "Shannon-Wiener Index"

Simpson's Diversity Index is a measure of diversity. In ecology, it is often used to quantify the biodiversity of a habitat. It takes into account the number of species present, as well as the relative abundance of each species. The Simpson index represents the probability that two randomly selected individuals in the habitat belong to the same species. ...more on Wikipedia about "Simpson Index"

Species evenness is a measure of biodiversity which quantifies how equal the populations are numerically. So if there are 40 foxes, and 1000 dogs, the population is not very even. But if there are 40 foxes and 42 dogs, the population is quite even. The evenness of a population can be represented by E={ H^\prime \over H_{max} } which is constrained between 0 and 1. The less variation in populations between the species, the higher E is. ...more on Wikipedia about "Species evenness"

Species richness is the simplest measure of biodiversity and is simply a count of the number of different species in a given area. It is referred to in equations as S. ...more on Wikipedia about "Species richness"
