Book fairs

BookExpo America (commonly referred to within the book publishing industry as BEA) is the largest annual book trade fair in the United States. BEA is almost always held in a major city (in 2006 it will be in Washington, D.C.) over four days in late May, sometimes running in to early June. Nearly all significant book publishers in the United States, and many from abroad, have booths and exhibits at BEA, and use the fair as an opportunity to showcase upcoming titles, sell current books, socialize with colleagues from other publishing houses, and sell and buy subsidiary rights and international rights (although not on the scale of the rights negotiation that occurs at the Frankfurt Book Fair in October). Authors, librarians, and buyers for book retailers also attend the event. ...more on Wikipedia about "BookExpo America"

The Calcutta Book Fair (now renamed Kolkata Book Fair in English, and officially Kolkata Boi Mela in romanized Bengali) is a winter fair in Kolkata. It is a unique book fair in the sense of not being a trade fair - the book fair is primarily for the general public rather than whole-sale distributors. It is the world's largest non-trade book fair, Asia's largest book fair and is probably the world's single largest annual conglomeration of books after the Frankfurt Book Fair. Many Calcuttans consider the book fair an inherent part of Kolkata, and instances of people visiting the fair every day during its duration is not uncommon. The fair also has a typical fairground experience with a book flavour - with the presence of picnickers, singer-songwriters, and candy floss vendors on the fair premises. ...more on Wikipedia about "Calcutta Book Fair"

Comiket, otherwise known as the Comic Market or CM, is the world's largest comic convention, held twice a year in Tokyo, Japan. The first CM was held in December 1975, with only about 30 participating circles and an estimated 700 attendees. Attendance has since swelled to over a quarter of a million people. The convention lasts for three days. CM is held for the purpose of fans exchanging and communicating through their beloved hobby of dōjinshi. CM is not about profiting by selling massive amounts of books, and corporate comic publishers are not allowed to participate in CM. CM is a grassroots DIY effort by fans for fans. CM is not a convention motivated by profit, and as such no mainstream publishers' comics are for sale at CM. However, as items sold in CM are considered very rare (because dōjinshi are seldom reprinted), some items sold at CM can be found in shops or on the Internet at prices up to 10 times the item's original price. ...more on Wikipedia about "Comiket"
