The Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra is the resident summer orchestra of Chautauqua Institution. It plays concerts on most Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday nights throughout the Institution's nine-week season. The CSO draws its members from professional orchestras all over the country, and even some from outside the U.S. Nearly all of its violinists (and one violist!) are concertmasters of their home orchestras, demonstrating the caliber of musicians that come to play in this professional summer orchestra. Chautauqua, Illinois also known as New Piasa Chautauqua is a private gated summer resort that started as an 19th century tent Chautauqua. The name Piasa is taken from an Indian painting of a mythical bird, the Piasa bird painted on the bluffs high above the Mississippi River. It is located in two prinicpal valleys on the Mississippi River. It is between Elsah, Illinois and Grafton, Illinois in Jersey County. Today it is bordered by and has access from the River Road. Lewis Miller was an Ohio businessman who made a fortune in the late 19th century as inventor of the first combine (harvester-reaper machine) with the blade mounted efficiently in front of the horse rather than pulled behind it. He devoted much of his wealth to charitable causes associated with the Methodist Church, and was the inventor of the "Akron plan" for Sunday schools, a building layout with a central assembly hall surrounded by small classrooms. Palestine Park is located on the grounds of Chautauqua Institution in western NY. The park is a scale-model of the Holy Land, including tiny cities, hills, rivers, and seas in approximately correct geographical location. Palestine Park is laid out along the shores of Chautauqua Lake (which takes the place of the Mediterranean Sea).
