Cricket in the West Indies

The 2005-06 West Indian cricket season includes all domestic cricket matches played by senior teams with first class status in the West Indies between October 2005 and March 2006, and also the international feats of the West Indies team, who is not scheduled to play any home games during this period but are to play home matches during April, May and June 2006. The season began on 2005-10-03 with the first matches of the one-day KFC Cup, and is scheduled to last until 2006-03-19 when England A depart after their tour which will include one-day and first class matches against the West Indies A team. In recent years, it has been run over a week's time as a group stage followed by knock-out stages, unlike the sister competitions, the ING Cup in Australia and National League in England, which run as league competitions over the course of six months. Guyana are the current holders, after they beat Barbados in the final, and they are also the team to have won it most, with nine titles, although two of them have been shared. West Indies were severely depleted owing to a contract dispute, which led to players like Brian Lara, Chris Gayle and Corey Collymore refusing to play. Thus, Sri Lanka went into the series as even more overwhelming favourites, their strong game at home and West Indies' poor form - with only one Test win in the last ten attempts.
