The Minuteman Bikeway is a paved mixed-use path/ rail trail in suburban Boston, Massachusetts. It runs 10 miles (16 km) from Bedford to the Alewife station at the end of the MBTA Red Line in Cambridge. It passes through the towns of Lexington and Arlington on the way. At the Cambridge terminus, it connects with two other bike paths - the Fitchburg Cutoff Path, and the Cambridge Linear Park which leads to the Somerville Community Path. Uses include bicycling, walking, jogging, and inline skating. In the winter there is often enough snow on the Bikeway for cross-country skiing, as the bikeway is not plowed except near the subway station. No motorized vehicles are allowed, except for powered wheelchairs. The National Cycle Network is a network of cycle routes in the United Kingdom. The routes are chosen to minimise contact with motor traffic; for example by using former pedestrian routes, disused railways, very minor roads, canal towpaths, or traffic-calmed routes in towns and cities. The National Cycle Network was created by the charity Sustrans (Sustainable Transport), and aided by a £42.5 million National Lottery grant. The goal was to create 5,000 miles of cycle routes by 2000. This was achieved, and a new goal was then set to double that to 10,000 miles by 2005.
