European microstates

The European microstates are microstates (independent states of a very small area) in Europe. One, the Vatican City, is the smallest state in the world. The entire country is about 0.2 square miles. Since it is governed by the Bishop of Rome, or the Pope, its government can be described as ecclesiastical and the highest state functionaries are in fact clergymen. The modern-day home of the popes, it is the smallest independent nation state in the world in terms of area and population (that is, if that of the Knights of Malta is not counted as a country).
