The Israel painted frog or Palestinian painted frog (Discoglossus nigriventer) is an extinct amphibian, whose range was limited to the HaHula Lake marshes in Israel and adjacent Syria. Due to drainage of the marshes in the 1950s, this rare species disappeared. It was classified as extinct in 1996, but continues to be listed as an endangered species in Israel on the slim hope that a relict population may be found in the Golan Heights. Almost nothing is known about its life history, because it was only found twice by scientists: once (four specimens, of which one still exists) in 1940, from which specimens it was described; a single specimen was found in 1955. This was the last record of this species. ...more on Wikipedia about "Israel painted frog"

Only species extinct since the British Isles were separated from mainland Europe are included. The date beside each species is the last date when a specimen was observed in the wild, or where this is not known, the approximate date of extinction. The list is complete for mammals, reptiles, freshwater fish and amphibians. ...more on Wikipedia about "List of extinct animals of the British Isles"

This is a list of extinct animals of the Netherlands. A lot of animal species and subspecies once lived in the Netherlands but have disappeared today. Fossilized remains of the grey whale (Eschrichtuis robustus), have been found dated to 340 BC, demonstrating that this species once roamed the North Sea, although it is no longer found there. A lower jaw of a lynx (Lynx lynx lynx) was found at the remains of a Roman settlement near Valkenburg in the Netherlands. During excavations of sites dated to the Roman period (around 400BC) on the Rhine delta there were findings of important breeding sites of the Dalmatian Pelican ( Pelecanus crispus). According to the hunting rights of the bishops of Utrecht we know that brown bears (Ursus arctos arctos) were still found in the Netherlands as late as the 11th century. According to a hunting licence from Drenthe, elk (Alces alces alces) were also known to be in this country until 1025. The Atlantic Northern Right Whale (Eubalaena glacialis), which once appeared from the Bay of Biscay to Norway, have disappeared from the waters around the Netherlands. It is suspected that the last whales were caught at the end of the Middle Ages. ...more on Wikipedia about "List of extinct animals of the Netherlands"

The Rocky Mountain locust (Melanoplus spretus) was the major form of locust that ranged through almost the entire western half of the United States (and some western portions of Canada) until the end of the 19th century. The last recorded sighting of a live specimen was in 1902. Preserved remains have been found in Grasshopper Glacier. The insect may have produced larger swarms than any other type of locust. One sighting famous to entomologists recorded a swarm 198,000 square miles (513,000 km²) in estimated size—greater than the area of California, the third-largest U.S. state. ...more on Wikipedia about "Rocky Mountain locust" Whatever You're Into, Get Into http://www.shortopedia.com. shortopedia

The Santo Stefano lizard lived on Santo Stefano Island a small island near Ventotene in the Tyrrhenian sea off the west coast of Italy, and part of the Pontine Islands. It became extinct in 1965, probably caused by feral cats and a snake species. These animals destroyed almost the whole population and any survivors seem to have interbred with an introduced subspecies. An epidemic of an unknown pathogen that followed wiped out the majority of the population and contributed to this subspecies' extinction. ...more on Wikipedia about "Santo Stefano Lizard"

The Xerces Blue butterfly (Glaucopsyche xerces) is an extinct species of butterfly. The species lived in coastal sand dunes of the Sunset District of San Francisco. The Xerces butterfly is believed to be the first American butterfly species to become extinct as a result of loss of habitat caused by urban development. The last Xerces Blue was seen in either 1941 (Garth, J.S. and J.W. Tilden, California Butterflies, UC Press 1986) or 1943 (Powell, J.A. and C.L. Hogue, California Insects, UC Press, 1979) on lands that may now be part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area. ...more on Wikipedia about "Xerces Blue"
