Fungicides

Benomyl (also marketed as Benlate) is a fungicide which was introduced in 1968 by Du Pont. It is a systemic benzimidazole fungicide that is selectively toxic to micro-organisms and to invertebrates, especially earthworms. Benomyl binds to microtubules, interfering with cell functions such as meiosis and intracellular transportation. The selective toxicity of benomyl as a fungicide is possibly due to its heightened effect on fungal rather than mammalian microtubules. ...more on Wikipedia about "Benomyl"

Chromated copper arsenate (CCA) is a wood preservative used for timber treatment, in use since 1930's. It is a mix of copper chromate and copper arsenate. It preserves the wood from rotting due to insects and microbes. It is also known under trade name Tanalith. The chromium acts as a bactericide, the copper acts as fungicide, and the arsenate acts as insecticide. It became used as an alternative to creosote, pentachlorophenol, and coal tar. Sodium silicate is one of the modern alternatives to CCA. ...more on Wikipedia about "Chromated copper arsenate"

Cycloheximide ( IUPAC designation 4-{(2R)-2-[(1S,3S,5S)-3,5-dimethyl-2-oxocyclohexyl]-2-hydroxyethyl}piperidine-2,6-dione) is an inhibitor of protein biosynthesis in eukaryotic organisms, produced by the bacterium Streptomyces griseus. Cycloheximide exerts its effect on protein synthesis by blocking translational elongation. Because of significant toxic side effects, including DNA damage, teratogenesis, and other reproductive effects (including birth defects and toxicity to sperm), cycloheximide is generally used only in in vitro research applications, and is not suitable for human use as a therapeutic antibiotic compound. Although it has been used as a fungicide in agricultural applications, this application is now decreasing as the health risks have become better understood. ...more on Wikipedia about "Cycloheximide"

A natural pesticide found in carrots, which protects them from fungal diseases, such as liquorice rot that causes black spots on the roots during storage. Falcarinol is thought to reduce the risk of developing cancer, as a research team from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne found in February 2005. ...more on Wikipedia about "Falcarinol"
