Aurora, Nevada is a ghost town located in western central Nevada, USA, approximately three miles from the California border. The town was founded in 1860, and at one point had a population of around 10,000. Aurora's mines produced $27 million worth of gold by 1869. The town was governed by both California and Nevada until it was discovered that the town lay entirely in Nevada. Cahaba, Alabama (sometimes spelled Cahawba) was the first permanent state capital of Alabama from 1820 to 1826. ( Huntsville was designated as the temporary capital upon the formation of the state legislature in 1819). It was located near the confluence of the Alabama and Cahaba Rivers, not far from the city of Selma. Cahaba's low elevation next to the river gave it a reputation for flooding and an unhealthy atmosphere. Those people who were opposed to Cahaba being the capital used these arguments to persuade the legislature to move the capital to Tuscaloosa in 1826. Now a ghost town, it was the primary settlement in the Willamette Valley in the early 1840s and was site of the first provisional government of the Oregon Country. Dogtown ( also Dogtown Commons or Dogtown Common or Dogtown Village) is an abandoned inland settlement on Cape Ann in Massachusetts. It is divided between the city of Gloucester and the town of Rockport. It is in an area not particularly suited to agriculture, due to its poor and very rocky soil. Nevertheless it was settled, beginning in 1693, because its inland location afforded protection from pirates and from enemy navies. Another attraction was the fact that the area lay on what was originally the only direct land route between Sandy Bay and Gloucester.
