Honeydew, CA is a small town of less than 1,000 residents, located 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean on what is known as "The Lost Coast". The town is located in Southern Humboldt County, and is comprised of little more than a general store, elementary school, post office, with a few houses located nearby. Many of the locals live in the hills surrounding the the Mattole valley, which is named after the river which runs through it. There are three roads leading to Honeydew: one comes from neighboring Southern Humboldt town of Garberville, CA which follows Wilder Ridge Road (partly unpaved and so not recommended for people with low-bottomed cars), another off the 101 State Highway through the Redwood Forest, and another from Ferndale, CA in the north. The Ferndale route has scenic views of the Pacific Ocean and the neighboring town of Petrolia. Humboldt Bay and its tidal sloughs are open to fishing year-round, and the bay is home to a national wildlife refuge complex for the protection of wetlands and bay habitats for migratory birds. In the winter it is not unusual for the bay to serve as a feeding and resting site for more than one hundred thousand birds. It began when local sculptor Hobart Brown "improved" the appearance of his son's tricycle, and was challenged to a race down Main Street by Jack Mays. Soon, another twelve machines entered to inaugurate the first race. The president's assassination soon after moved Zehnder to memorialize the president. Zehnder paid $15,000 for the nine-foot statue.
