The Honda Insight is a 2-seater hatchback hybrid automobile manufactured by Honda. It was the first mass-produced hybrid automobile sold in the United States, introduced in 1999 (in Japan, however, the first generation of the Toyota Prius was launched in 1997). According to the EPA, the 5-speed manual transmission variant of the Insight is the most fuel-efficient mass-produced automobile sold in the United States. 1 The Insight is also one of the cleanest: the CARB rated the 5-speed variant ULEV and the CVT variant SULEV. This trade off is due to the 5-speed's lean-burn ability which increases efficiency at the expense of slightly higher Carbon monoxide(CO) emissions. ...more on Wikipedia about "Honda Insight"

A hybrid vehicle uses multiple propulsion systems to provide motive power. This most commonly refers to gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles, which use gasoline (petrol) and electric batteries to power internal-combustion engines (ICEs) and electric motors. Modern mass-produced hybrids, such as the Toyota Prius, recharge their batteries by capturing kinetic energy via regenerative braking. As well, when cruising or idling, some of the output of the combustion engine is fed to a generator (merely the electric motor(s) running in generator mode ) which produces electricity to charge the batteries. This contrasts with all- electric cars which use batteries charged by an external source such as the grid, or a range extending trailer. Nearly all hybrids still require gasoline as their sole fuel source— though diesel and other fuels such as ethanol or plant based oils have also seen occasional use. Some hybrids have been equiped with external electrical recharging capability significantly increasing their mileage. The toyota prius when first came out in Japan was an origionaly externaly rechargeable vehicle. Organizations such as CalCars instal additional plug in recharge capabilities giving hybrind fuel efficiency of over 100 mpg. For short trips, some plug in capable hybrids can work gas free, such as to the grocery store. ...more on Wikipedia about "Hybrid vehicle"

A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) or gas-electric hybrid fueled vehicle is a hybrid which has additional battery capacity and the ability to be recharged from an external electrical outlet. In addition, modifications are made to the vehicle's control software. The vehicle can be used for short trips of moderate speed without needing the internal combustion engine (ICE) component of the vehicle, thereby saving fuel costs. In this mode of operation the vehicle operates as a pure electric vehicle with a weight penalty (the ICE).
