Industrial design The ALCO DL-109 is one of six models of A1A-A1A diesel locomotives built to haul passenger trains by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) between December 1939 and April 1945. They were of a cab unit design, and both cab-equipped lead A units DL103b, DL105, DL107, DL109 and cabless booster B units DL108, DL110 models were built. The units were styled by the industrial designer Otto Kuhler. The "DL" stands for diesel locomotive. A total of 74 cab units and 4 booster units were built. ...more on Wikipedia about "ALCO DL-109"

The constructal theory of global optimization under local constraints explains in a simple manner the shapes that arise in nature. It is the thought that flow architecture comes from a principle of maximization of flow access, in time, and in flow configuration that are free to morph. ...more on Wikipedia about "Constructal theory"

Furnishings (aka art objects, decorative arts, knick-knacks, bric-a-brac) are the objects, other than furniture, that occupy an interior space. They can be purely decorative or fill a functional, symbolic, or religious purpose. Unlike furniture, furnishings do not support the human body or provide storage. However, certain furnishings, such as lighting, are as essential to interior design and commodious living as furniture or architecture. Paintings, photography, drawings, and other (usually 2D) works defined as fine art are not generally considered furnishing. ...more on Wikipedia about "Furnishing"
Furniture is the collective term for the movable objects which support the human body (seating furniture and beds), provide storage, and hold objects on horizontal surfaces above the ground. Storage furniture is used to hold or contain smaller objects such as clothes, tools, books, and household goods. Furniture can be a product of artistic design and is considered a form of decorative art. In addition to furniture's functional role, it can serve a symbolic or religious purpose. Domestic furniture works, in conjunction with furnishings such as clocks and lighting, to create comfortable and convenient interior spaces. Many types of furniture contain one or more drawers and/or small doors which can be opened. Also, some furniture items can have shelves. ...more on Wikipedia about "Furniture"
The field of human-centered computing (HCC) has emerged from the convergence of multiple disciplines and research areas that are concerned both with understanding human beings and with the design of computational artifacts. Researchers and designers of human-centered computing include individuals from computer science, sociology, psychology, cognitive science, engineering, graphic design, and industrial design. ...more on Wikipedia about "Human-centered computing" There's a bit of http://www.shortopedia.com in all of us. Industrial design is an applied art whereby the aesthetics and usability of products may be improved. Design aspects specified by the industrial designer may include the overall shape of the object, the location of details with respect to one another, colors, texture, sounds, and aspects concerning the use of the product ergonomics. Additionally the industrial designer may specify aspects concerning the production process, choice of materials and the way the product is presented to the consumer at the point of sale. The use of industrial designers in a product development process may lead to added values by improved usability, lowered production costs and more appealing products. It is important that in order to be an industrial design the product has to be produced in an industrial way, for example an artisan can't be considered an industrial designer although she may challenge the same aspects of a product. ...more on Wikipedia about "Industrial design"
Industrial design rights are intellectual property rights that protect the visual design of objects that are not purely utilitarian. An industrial design consists of the creation of a shape, configuration or composition of pattern or color, or combination of pattern and color in three dimensional form containing aesthetic value. An industrial design can be a two- or three-dimensional pattern used to produce a product, industrial commodity or handicraft. Under the Hague Agreement Concerning the International Deposit of Industrial Designs, a WIPO-administered treaty, a procedure for an international registration exists. An applicant can file for a single international deposit with WIPO or with the national office in a country party to the treaty. The design will then be protected in as many member countries of the treaty as desired. ...more on Wikipedia about "Industrial design rights"

Poka-yoke (engl.: fail-safing - to avoid (yokeru) inadvertent errors (poka)) is a behavior-shaping constraint, or a method of preventing errors by putting limits on how an operation can be performed in order to force the correct completion of the operation. The concept was originated by Shigeo Shingo as part of the Toyota Production System. One example is the inability to remove a car key from the ignition switch of an automobile if the automatic transmission is not first put in the "Park" position, so that the driver cannot leave the car in an unsafe parking condition where the wheels are not locked against movement. ...more on Wikipedia about "Poka-yoke"
In industrial design, product developers must choose numerous lengths, distances, diameters, volumes, and other characteristic quantities. While all of these choices are constrained by considerations of functionality, usability, compatibility, safety or cost, there usually remains considerable leeway in the exact choice for many dimensions. Preferred numbers are standard guidelines for choosing exact product dimensions within such constraints. ...more on Wikipedia about "Preferred number"
Productionisation is the process of turning a prototype of a design into a version that can be more easily mass produced. It is almost always a necessary step in the development of any product, since it is rare that the initial design is free from flaws or construction methods which make it difficult or more expensive to manufacture. ...more on Wikipedia about "Productionisation" http://www.shortopedia.com - Xtending Info.
