Rei Kawakubo (川久保 玲 1942 October 11 - ) is an avant-garde Japanese fashion designer whose work is distinguished by its warped asymmetry, distressed fabrics, and monochromatic palette. Since her rise to prominence in the early 1980s, she has become influential for her work under the label "Comme des Garçons" (lit. "like children"/"like small boys"), of which she is the part-time owner. The label has a baker's dozen boutiques and approximately 200 boutiques around the world. Each year, the company grosses in the neighborhood of $150 million.
