Light rail The Adelaide O-Bahn is the world's fastest guided busway and, at 12 kilometres, the world's longest. It opened in 1986 as a part of the Adelaide Metro network in South Australia, shuttling over seven million passengers back and forth a year. The project cost around AU$98m. It takes roughly 20 minutes to travel the length of the busway. C-Train is the name given by Calgary Transit to their light railway, often called the LRT(light rail transit), in operation since 1981. Currently two major routes are operated on 42.1 km (26 miles) of track, running into the southern, northwestern, and northeastern sections of the city. There are also currently plans to build additional lines running to the west, north and the southeast of the city. Most track is at grade with its own right of way. The downtown portion is shared right of way. 8% of the system is underground, and 5% is grade separated (elevated). Trains are powered by overhead electric wires and pantographs. EuskoTran ("BasqueTram") is the name of the tramway system in Bilbao, Spain. Built in 2002 as a complement to the Bilbao metro, it is often described as the most modern public transport system in the world. The trams travel at speeds of up to 50 km/h but do not make much more noise than a car. The grass covered tracks (as seen in the photo) run along the Nervion river, past the Bilbao Guggenheim Museum and San Mamés stadium. Each 25-meter long tram can carry 192 people, 50 of them seated (about the capacity of three buses). Access to the trams is at platform level, making it easy for all passengers to get on and off through the tram's eight doors. The Liverpool Overhead Railway was a railway in Liverpool, England, which opened on February 4 1893. Such a railway had first been proposed in 1852, and construction began in 1889. It ran from Seaforth Carriage Shed to Herculaneum Dock, a distance of six miles. It used standard gauge track and there were 14 stations.
