Los Angeles County Metro Rail Collisions with vehicles and passengers at Blue Line crossings have occurred at a greater frequency than expected by planners, who had not anticipated many Angelenos' unfamiliarity with train crossings. The speed of the trains and the impatience of drivers also play a factor in these collisions. Trains operate at a maximum of 55 mph between stations. Many of the vehicle accidents involving the Blue Line have resulted from drivers going around lowered gates. The accident rate has declined notably following the installation of four-quadrant crossing gates at most crossings, effectively preventing drivers from going around lowered gates. In addition, cameras are used along some problem intersections which issue traffic tickets when drivers go around gates. ...more on Wikipedia about "LACMTA Blue Line"
