Marches


The Greek term anabasis referred to an expedition from a coastline into the interior of a country. The term katabasis referred to a trip from the interior to the coast. So anabasis means "Expedition" or "The March Up Country" and carries the same connotation in Greek as it does in English. The Bataan Death March was a war crime involving the forcible transfer of prisoners of war, with wide-ranging abuse and high fatalities, by Japanese forces in the Philippines, in 1942, during World War II. Dharasana Satyagraha was the the next stage in Salt Satyagraha by Mahatma Gandhi. After making salt at Dandi, Gandhi decided to take over The Dharsana Salt Works at Dharsana in Gujrat, this was convyed to the British Voiceroy on May 4, 1930. Gandhi was arrestted immediately. However the Indian National Congress decided to continue the proposed plan of action. Many of the Congress leaders were arrested by that time, including Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and others. However the peaceful agitaion continued under the leadership of Sarojini Naidu and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. The Long March (長征, pinyin:Chángzhēng) was a massive military retreat undertaken by the Chinese Communist Army to evade the pursuit of the Kuomintang army. The Communist Army of the Chinese Soviet Republic, led by Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai, was on the brink of complete annihilation by Chiang Kai-Shek's troops in Jiangxi Province in October 1934. The communists escaped in circling retreat to the north, which ultimately covered some 8,000 km (4,960 miles) over 370 days. The route branched through some of the most difficult terrain of western China and arrived 9,600 km (5,952 miles) west, then north, to Shaanxi. The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom was a large political rally that took place on August 28, 1963. It was organized principally by A. Philip Randolph, Bayard Rustin and Martin Luther King Jr. During this March, King delivered his famous " I Have a Dream" speech at the Lincoln Memorial. "The March" occurred during the final months of the Second World War in Europe. About thirty-thousand Allied PoWs were force-marched westward across Poland and Germany in appalling winter conditions, lasting about four months from January to April 1945.
