A typical chain letter consists of a message that attempts to induce the recipient to make a number of copies of the letter and then pass them on to one or more new recipients. A chain letter can be considered a type of meme, a self-replicating piece of information that uses a human host to distribute copies of itself. Common methods used by chain letters include emotionally manipulative stories, get-rich-quick pyramid schemes, and the exploitation of superstition to threaten the recipient with bad luck or even physical violence if he or she "breaks the chain" and refuses to adhere by the conditions set out by the letter. ...more on Wikipedia about "Chain letter"

The term "meme" ( in the IPA; rhymes with "theme"), derived from the Greek word mimema, "something imitated" often refers to a piece of information passed from one mind to another. The term first came into popular use with the publication of the book The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins in 1976, and the conceptual framework of memes borrows from the study of genes -- the units of biological transmission. Historically, the notion of a unit of social evolution, and a similar term (from Greek mneme, 'memory'), first appeared in 1904 in a work by the German evolutionary biologist Richard Semon: Die Mnemische Empfindungen in ihren Beziehungen zu den Originalenempfindungen, translated into English in 1921 as The Mneme. ...more on Wikipedia about "Meme"

Memes themselves are neither good nor. An example of a popular Meme being used today is the race meme. Race is an ideology that is made up of several memes. The noosphere can be seen as the " sphere of human thought" being derived from the Greek νους (" nous") meaning " mind" in the style of " atmosphere" and " biosphere". Just as the biosphere is composed of all the organisms on Earth and their interactions, the noosphere is composed of all the interacting minds on Earth. The word is also sometimes used to refer to a transhuman consciousness emerging from these interactions. This is the view proposed by the theologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, who added that the noosphere is evolving towards an ever greater integration, culminating in the Omega Point—which he saw as the ultimate goal of history. ...more on Wikipedia about "Noosphere"

Samizdat ( ) was the clandestine copying and distribution of government-suppressed literature or other media in Soviet-bloc countries. The Selfish Gene is a very popular and somewhat controversial book by Richard Dawkins. The phrase "selfish gene" in the title of the book was coined by Dawkins as a provocative way of expressing the gene-centric view of evolution, which holds that evolution is best viewed as acting on genes, and that selection at the level of organisms or populations almost never overrides selection on genes. More precisely, an organism is expected to evolve to maximise its inclusive fitness—the number of copies of its genes passed on globally (rather than by a particular individual). As a result, populations will tend towards an evolutionarily stable strategy. The book also coins the term ' meme', for a unit of human cultural evolution analogous to the gene, suggesting that such "selfish" replication may also model human culture, albeit in a different sense. Memetics has become the subject of many studies since the publication of the book. ...more on Wikipedia about "The Selfish Gene"

"...the terrorists have won", or "...then the terrorists win" was a popular phrase and meme used in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States and, to a lesser degree, the United Kingdom, to reflect the role of the public in the War on Terrorism against al-Qaida. The typical formation would be "If we don't [insert regular activity here], then the terrorists have won"; the idea being that the fundamental intent of the terrorists was to disrupt the daily routine of U.S. citizens. The phrase was originally used by journalists and politicians to compel people to live their lives normally. However, the phrase was then subverted by various groups to push various agendas, claiming that to do otherwise was in the terrorists intentions, causing the phrase to quickly become clichéd. Satirical sources (including many blogs) harped on the preachy, meaningless nature of the platitude. Critics of reactionary legislation like the Patriot Act also argued with its use to defend such legislation, as the original intent of the phrase is to promote freedom, but it was being used to justify broad restrictions on U.S. citizens. ...more on Wikipedia about "The terrorists have won"
