Mercyful Fate Mercyful Fate King Diamond (born Kim Bendix Petersen, June 14, 1956, Denmark) is a rock musician that is know for his shifting vocal patterns and has influenced many like Metallica and Trivium. The former football player's first band was Black Rose. In 1980, he formed Mercyful Fate. The band that to a large extent pioneered the genre of hair metal because of the group's stage presence, make-up and occult lyrics. Their musical style is somewhat remenicent of heavy metal, power metal, progressive metal and rock opera. Mercyful Fate is a Danish heavy metal group, and helped inspire black metal (by playing a form of proto-black metal). The band was founded in Denmark in 1980 from the ashes of Hank Shermann's band Brats' and King Diamond's band Black Rose. Shortly thereafter, in the Spring of 1981 they helped out a fellow Dane, Michael Denner, with demos for his band Danger Zone.
