Žandarmerija is a military body in Serbia charged with special police duties. The name žandarmerija comes from French word gendarmerie. It dates back to 1860 when it was formed with 120 officers. It was disbanded after World War II only to be restored in 2001 as a special police force. It was established upon act declared by the minister of interior - Dušan Mihajlović. It is comprised of 4 squads. Every squad is consisted of 500 officers. Former Special Anti-terrorist Unit and Special Task Forces became part of Žandarmerija. It's bases are located in Belgrade, Nis, Kraljevo and between Preševo and Bujanovac. First head of modern Žandarmerija was Goran Radosavljević Guri.
