Alwin Nikolais born in 1910 in Southington, Connecticut. He studied piano at an early age and began his performing career as an organist accompanying silent films. As a young artist, he gained skills in scenic design, acting, puppetry and music composition. It was after attending a performance by the German dancer Mary Wigman that he was inspired to study dance. Mary Wigman ( 1886 – 1973) was a German dancer, choreographer, and teacher. Wigman was a very influential German dancer who took inspiration not only from the Dada and surrealist movements around her, but from Non-Western culture as well. She would often dance to tribal sounds created by flutes, drums, and gongs of China, Africa, Thailand, and India. Mary Wigman's "Hexatanz" or "Witch Dance" will be revived for the programme, "The Art of the Solo" to be presented on September 29, 2006 at the Baltimore Museum of Art. The newly restored musical score by William Goetze has also been recreated using portions of the music on the film and portions of the original written score found in Rudolph Bach's book, "Das Mary Wigman Verk". The programme is curated by Mino Nicolas who has recreated many works of seminal dance choreographers of the 20th century.
