The Kingdom of Morocco ( Arabic المملكة المغربية) is a country in northwest Africa. It has a long coastline on the Atlantic Ocean that reaches past the Strait of Gibraltar into the Mediterranean Sea. It borders Algeria to the east, though the Algerian border is closed, Western Sahara to the south, the Mediterranean Sea and Spain to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to its west. The Southern Provinces is the Moroccan name for Western Sahara, indicating its annexation by the kingdom. The provinces in question are Río de Oro and Saguia el-Hamra. Rio de Oro was annexed by Morocco and Saguia el-Hamra by Mauritania (as Tiris al-Gharbiyya) in 1975, after the Madrid Accords with Spain. An indigenous Sahrawi organization, the Algeria backed Polisario Front, waged a guerrilla war on what they termed a new colonization, which caused Mauritania to pull out in 1979.
