Blue-eyed soul is a term used to describe soul music as performed by white people. It is (strictly speaking) a misnomer: the musician does not have to have blue eyes: here, "blue-eyed" is synonymous with Caucasian. The definition is music that is traditionally African-American (or Afro-European), but made by a white musician. Early in its history, blue-eyed soul was created with Caucasian audiences in mind. Today, however, much blue-eyed soul music is created in the same niche as traditional soul music. Blue-eyed soul is special in that it is a reversal of what is considered the norm. African-Americans had (and have) been trying to gain equality in mainstream white audiences since the birth of the United States. For white artists to try to break into black music is thus an opposite trend. However, blue-eyed soul did not properly gain a foothold until the seventies. In that decade, the era of blaxploitation, blue-eyed soul as we now know it began: white artists making black music for black or mass audiences. A true blue-eyed soul artist does not just mimic an African-American soul singer or sing an occasional soul tune or two; he/she makes a full career singing soul music and frequently writes songs in this genre. Artists such as Bobby Caldwell and Teena Marie were so convincing, their identities were hidden until their careers began to take off. Although many blue-eyed soul performers have had a great degree of success, the reputed Queen of Blue-Eyed Soul is Teena Marie. ...more on Wikipedia about "Blue-eyed soul"
