Mason and Hamlin, one of the outstanding piano manufacturers of all time, was founded by Henry Mason and Emmons Hamlin in Boston in 1854. Henry Mason was the son of Lowell Mason, the famous American hymn composer and musical educator. Henry's brother William was the first American piano student of Franz Liszt and introduced many works of Robert Schumann and other famous Europeans to Americans during the rough Civil War era and beyond, this at a time when classical music still had little American identity. William played a Steinway, which must have caused some conflict in the family.
