Dr. James H. Trainor (1935-2003) was born August 22 1935, in Lancaster, New Hampshire, the son of Peter D. and Bernice E. Trainor. He graduated in 1953 from Lancaster Academy, where he was the class valedictorian. He attended the University of New Hampshire in Durham, where he received a bachelor of science degree in physics in 1958 and a master's degree in physics in 1959. He earned his Ph.D. from UNH in 1964 and made history by being the first graduate of that university to receive a doctorate in physics. From 1962 to 1964, he was a U.S. Air Force research fellow. Originally a German scientist leading Germany's rocket development program before and during the Second World War, he entered the United States at the end of the war through the then-secret Operation Paperclip. Sir William Hayward Pickering ONZ KBE ( December 24, 1910— March 15, 2004) was a New Zealand-American who headed Pasadena, California's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for 22 years, retiring in 1976. He was a senior NASA luminary and pioneered the exploration of space. His group launched Explorer I from Cape Canaveral on 31 January 1958 less than four months after the Russians had launched Sputnik (much to the surprise of the Americans). Explorer III discovered the radiation field round the earth that is now known as the Van Allen radiation belt. Explorer 1 orbited for 10 years and was the forerunner of a number of successful JPL earth and deep-space satellites.
