The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline (sometimes abbreviated as BTC pipeline) transports crude oil 1,760 km (1,093 miles) from the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli oil field in the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. It passes through Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan; Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia; and Ceyhan, a port on the south-eastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey, hence its name. The flag of Nagorno-Karabakh, an unrecognised self-proclaimed government in a region of Azerbaijan, is derived from the flag of Armenia, with only a white pattern added. This symbolises the Armenian heritage and population of the area and represents Nagorno-Karabakh as being a separated region of Armenia by the triangular shape. Stepanakert (also known as Xankəndi from the name used by Azeris; that name was previously spelled in the Latin alphabet as Xankendi and Khankendi under formerly used transliterations from the Cyrillic and Arabic alphabet versions of the name) is the capital city of the self declared Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. Control of the area has been the subject of dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia, including war, ever since the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
