Coal pipelines are pipelines used to transport coal from where it is mined to where it is consumed. For very short distances, large trucks are used to transport coal, but trains and barges are preferred for long distances. In some cases it is more economical to move the coal by pipeline than by train or barge. This can happen when there is no suitable railway or waterway to transport the coal, or when it must be moved very long distances. ...more on Wikipedia about "Coal pipeline"
The Druzhba pipeline is the world's longest oil pipeline (the next longest being the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline). It was constructed in Soviet times to transport oil from central Russia to points west over a distance of some 4,000 km (2,500 miles). The name "Druzhba" means "friendship", alluding to the fact that the pipeline was intended to supply oil to the energy-hungry western regions of the Soviet Union, to its "fraternal socialist allies" in the former Soviet bloc, and to western Europe. Today, it is one of the principal arteries for the transportation of hydrocarbons across Europe. ...more on Wikipedia about "Druzhba pipeline"

A 600 mile dual pipeline is Iraq's largest crude oil export line. The 40 inch line has a fully-operational capacity of 1.1 million bbl/d, but reportedly could handle only around 900,000 bbl/d pre-war. The line has been the main target for sabotage since 2003 and is open only sporadically. Capacity of the line is believed to be as high as 600,000 bbl/d, with significant repairs still required. ...more on Wikipedia about "Kirkuk-Ceyhan Oil Pipeline"
The Lakehead Pipeline, also known as the Lakehead System, is one of the largest oil pipeline systems in the world, totaling 3,100 miles (4,990 km) in length including multiple paths. 1,880 miles (3,025 km) of the system is in the United States while the rest is in Canada. On average, it delivers 1.4 million barrels (222,582 m³) of crude oil and other products each day to the major oil refineries in the American Midwest and the Canadian province of Ontario. The Canadian portion is owned by Enbridge, while the U.S. portion is partly owned by that company through Enbridge Energy Partners, LP, formerly known as Lakehead Pipe Line Partners and Lakehead Pipe Line Company. ...more on Wikipedia about "Lakehead Pipeline"

Operation Pluto (Pipe-Lines Under The Ocean) was a World War II operation by British scientists, oil companies and armed forces to construct undersea oil pipelines under the English Channel between England and France. The scheme was developed by AC Hartley, chief engineer with the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, after Admiral Louis Mountbatten initiated the concept. Allied forces on the European continent required a tremendous amount of fuel; pipelines were considered necessary to relieve dependence on oil tankers, which could be slowed by bad weather, were susceptible to German submarines, and were also needed in the Pacific War. ...more on Wikipedia about "Operation Pluto"

Slurry pipelines are used to transport aggregate materials by embedding them in a fluid, usually water. At the end of the pipeline, the material is dehydrated, and the aggregate is thus available. However, the water that is removed may contain environmentally hazardous materials and create an environmental problem. Typical materials that are transferred using slurry pipelines include coal, copper, iron, and phosphate concentrates, limestone, lead, zinc, nickel, bauxite and oil sands. ...more on Wikipedia about "Slurry pipeline"
