EAM-ELAS is the name of the main communist resistance movement in Greece during World War II. EAM-ELAS stands for abbreviation of Ethnikón Apeleftherotikón Métopon-Ethnikós Laïkós Apeleftherotikós Stratós which means National Liberation Front-National Popular Liberation Army. EAM-ELAS was formed in 1941 and its military part in December 1942. It fought against the Germans and the Italians and later on engaged in a war against guerilla forces of right-wing organizations, particularly EDES. EAM-ELAS was very active and successful, and around the end of the war its political power grew considerably.
