Cabora-Bassa (also spelled Cahora Bassa) is the name for an HVDC-power system between the static inverter station Songo, Mozambique, which is situated near the Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric Generation Station based on the Cahora Bassa dam near Zambezi falls in Mozambique, and the converter station Apollo near Pretoria, South Africa. The HVDC-power line from Cabora-Bassa is a symmetric HVDC, which can transmit 1920 megawatts at a voltage level of 533 kilovolts and 1800 amperes. Thyristor valves are used, which unlike other HVDC-schemes are mounted outdoors and not in a hall. The 1420 kilometre long powerline runs through inaccessible terrain, so it is mostly built as monopolar lines 1 km apart. In case of a single line failure, transmission with reduced power is possible via the surviving pole and return through the earth. ...more on Wikipedia about "Cabora-Bassa"

Elk River Station is an incinerator operating in Elk River, Minnesota that generates 35 to 42 megawatts of electrical power. The site was originally built as a coal and oil-fired facility in 1950, then was converted to a nuclear power plant ( boiling water reactor) in 1963. The nuclear reactor was small and only operated from 1964 until 1968 before undergoing decommission and dismantlement in the following years, ending in the early 1970s. It resumed operating on coal and oil in 1968. In 1989, the facility was again converted, this time to use garbage for fuel. Waste arrives from Anoka, Benton, Hennepin, Sherburne, and Stearns counties, and the ash remaining after incineration is taken to a landfill in Becker, Minnesota. Elk River Station is operated by the Great River Energy cooperative. ...more on Wikipedia about "Elk River Station"

Loy Yang Power Station is located on the outskirts of the city of Traralgon, in south eastern Victoria, Australia. It is coal powered, and is the largest amongst a number of power stations using the vast reserves of brown coal which exist in the Latrobe Valley. It is estimated that at current rates of extraction there is sufficient coal to last 1300 years. Loy Yang produces about one third of Victoria's electricity requirements, the vast majority of which is produced by coal powered plants. Australia's reliance on coal for power generation results in it being one of the largest per capita producers of carbon dioxide which is believed to contribute to global warming. ...more on Wikipedia about "Loy Yang Power Station"

In an ill-fated gas turbine episode which marked the life of the first President Street Power Station, Johannesburg, supply tenders were invited, but although the cheapest was for steam driven plant, the consultants recommended a gas engine scheme that promised sufficient savings in fuel consumption to recover the increased capital cost within a few years. However, the Scottish contractors, Stewart and Company, supplied untested and experimental engines. There was a history of costly failure of gas engines in UK linked to the problem of bituminous coal and impurities that caused breakdowns. The estimated power needed by Johannesburg was almost10 MW, which required gas engines bigger than any previously built. ...more on Wikipedia about "President Street Power Station, Johannesburg"
