Operation Midnight Climax was an operation initially established by Dr. George Hunter White under the alias of Morgan Hall for the CIA. The project consisted of a web of CIA run brothels in San Francisco and New York. It was established in order to study the effects of LSD on unconsenting individuals after the supply of consenting patients ran out. From 1953 to 1954, Dr. White, within the bounds of the operation, employed prostitutes from throughout San Francisco to lure unwitting men in to drinking alcohol dosed with LSD. The frequency of bad LSD trips observed led White to coin his own slang for the drug: "Stormy."
