The Baltimore rail crash was a 60-car train derailment that occurred in a tunnel in Baltimore on July 18, 2001. The derailment sparked a chemical fire that raged for six days and virtually shut down the downtown area until the heat caused a water main to rupture, largely extinguishing the fire but also causing significant flooding in the streets above. The Chase, Maryland wreck occurred at 1:04 PM on January 4, 1987 on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor main line near Chase, Maryland at Gunpow Interlocking, about 18 miles northeast of Baltimore. Amtrak train 94, the Colonial, from Washington DC to Boston crashed into a set of Conrail locomotives running light. Amtrak train 94's speed at the time of the collision was estimated at about 108 mph. Fifteen passengers on the Amtrak train were killed, along with the Amtrak engineer. A train stopping at the Sarhad(a town near Ghotki)rail station was hit from behind by a train that missed a signal. The collision caused several of the cars to derail. The Great East Thompson Train Wreck was a large rail disaster which occurred in East Thompson, Connecticut, on December 4, 1891. It happened on the New York and New England Railroad, which provided a shortcut from New York City to Boston by making a diagonal across Connecticut. That railroad is now abandoned, and most of its tracks removed.
