Religious buildings To the Romans an aedes was a building of religious significance, normally translated as temple or chapel. It generally differed from the more familiar term templum in that an aedes was a distinct structure whereas a templum often referred to a religious complex. The two terms are however used interchangeably by some sources especially towards the end of the empire. ...more on Wikipedia about "Aedes (Roman)"

Ġgantija (also Ggantia) is a megalithic temple complex on the Mediterranean island of Gozo (part of Malta). The two temples of Ġgantija on the island of Gozo are notable for their gigantic Neolithic structures, which were erected during the Neolithic Age (c. 3600-2500 BCE). At more than 6000 years old, the Ġgantija temples are the world's oldest free-standing structures, and the world's oldest religious structures, pre-dating the Pyramids of Egypt and Stonehenge. The temples were possibly the site of an Earth Mother Goddess Fertility Cult, with numerous figurines and statues found on site believed to be connected with that cult. ...more on Wikipedia about "Ġgantija"

A Nizhal Thangal (also called Narayana Swamy Temple) is a simple temple of the Ayyavazhi religion built per the instructions of Akilattirattu Ammanai by commoners in order to worship without distinction of color, race or caste. Cleanliness is strictly enforced: there are no sacrifices, no incenses, no arathi and no poojari. Inside the temples, no murti is used. Instead, a saffron cloth is laid on a chair, upon which a rudraksha is placed, and a mirror is placed on the wall behind it. Tamil is the official language of worship, and the object of worship is Lord Narayana with the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. A survey from the year 1998 states that there are approximately 7000 Nizhal Thangals throughout South India. ...more on Wikipedia about "Nizhal Thangal"

The Temple of Apollo at Bassae, built around 420 BC is a Doric style temple that faces north-south, unlike most other temples that face east-west. It was discovered by German and French travelers. The fact that it is intact can be credited for the fact that it stands in a remote location in northern Greece when most other temples were destroyed by Christian or Muslim inhabitants in later centuries. It was excavated in the 1800s by a group of Europeans who came and found frieze blocks in the temple. It was built by the architect Ictinus. It is a smaller temple and is made of local limestone except for the frieze, which is sculpted out of marble. Peristyle is 6 by 15 feet, a standard for the time. There are Ionic columns inside the porch and one Corinthian column and capitol were found. This is one of the first examples of the Corinthian order ever found and the temple is unique because it has a combination of all three styles of architecture. There was a door to one side (another unique feature in this temple), perhaps to allow light into the statue of Apollo. The one column was destroyed but a picture remains. It is a very floral capital. Unfortunately, the capital did not survive the excavations and was mistakenly shattered, however a drawing still survives. The temple contains optical refinements similar to those found in the Parthenon on the Acropolis, such as a curved floor. The sculpted frieze and pediments show a great deal of activity and the scenes show a lot of chaos and confusion—some of the poses are not naturalistic and the drapery on the clothes seems to take a life of its own. However, facial features are life-like and realistic, unlike those of the archaic period. For these reasons it is known to have been built after the Parthenon and during the late classical era. ...more on Wikipedia about "Temple of Apollo at Bassae"
