Alfa Pendular is the name of the pendolino high-speed train of Portuguese state railway company CP. It connects the cities of Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra, Santarém, Lisbon, Albufeira and Faro, among others. Its top speed is 220 km/h (136.7 mph). Its tilting technology allows the train to negotiate curves at higher speeds then conventional trains. The combination of the resulting high cornering velocity and the tilting movement of the carriages ensures a dynamic experience. ...more on Wikipedia about "Alfa Pendular"

Bilevel cars were a clever design to solve the problem of increasing passenger capacity on railcars, without squeezing more (smaller) seats into the same space and/or decreasing the pitch (distance between seats). ...more on Wikipedia about "Bilevel car"
A cab car is a special sort of rail passenger car used in push-pull operations. Most of the cab car is indistiguishable from a regular passenger carriage, but a full driving cab is built into the end of the coach, which has all the controls and guages necessary for remotely operating the train's locomotive. Externally, the car also includes a horn, bell, plow, and all of the lights that would normally be on a locomotive. The cab car is placed at the end of the train from which the train's locomotive can be remotely controlled. This allows for push-pull operation with a faster turnaround time for trains, by avoiding having to physically turn around the train or locomotive. ...more on Wikipedia about "Cab car"

A railroad crane is a piece of rail transport maintenance of way equipment. It generally resembles a conventional fixed-location crane except that the platform the crane sits on is a heavy duty reinforced flat car. Directly underneath the center of gravity for the crane is a pivot point that allows the crane to swivel around 360°; in this way the crane can locate its boom over the worksite no matter its location along the track. The trucks on the car under the crane will often include traction motors so that the crane is able to move itself along the railroad. ...more on Wikipedia about "Crane (railroad)" Go crack a www.shortopedia.com!
D6288 is a Tangara T-Set carriage in the CityRail network. It has the target plate 'T30'. D6288 was one of five "spare" Tangara driving trailers built in 1996 to provide replacements for carriages that are written off after an accident or carriages out of service for an extended period of time. Of the five, D6286 is on set T99 (replacing written off D6274), D6287 is on set T73 (replacing written off D6114), D6289 is on set T24 (replacing D6148) and OD6841 is on set G21 (replacing OD6807). D6288 was never put into service and is now used as a source of spare parts. ...more on Wikipedia about "D6288"

ETR 500 ( ElettroTreno 500) is the Italian high-speed train, introduced in 1993. Designed under the aegis of the Ferrovie dello Stato is now operated by Trenitalia on RFI tracks. Due to the fact that most of the Italian high-speed network is under construction these trains often run at lower speeds than the 300 km/h they were designed to run at. ...more on Wikipedia about "ETR 500"
Forty-and-eights were French 4-wheel boxcars used as military transport cars (the term itself refers to the cars' carrying capacity, said to be 40 men or eight horses). Built starting in the 1870s as regular freight boxcars, they were originally used in military service by the French army in both World Wars, and then later used by the German occupation in World War II and finally by the Allied liberators. ...more on Wikipedia about "Forty-and-eights"
A British High Speed Train (HST), also known as an Intercity 125, consists of two diesel power cars either end of a rake of between five and nine (but usually seven or eight) 'Mark 3' carriages. The train operates scheduled services at a maximum speed of 125 mph (200 km/h). It is considered to be one of the best trains Britain has produced, having been in regular service on premier routes for around three decades, although they are now showing signs of ageing. ...more on Wikipedia about "High Speed Train"
Hoodlebug was a nickname used for small passenger trains or trolley cars that provided commuter service in parts of America. The name usually applies to such service in rural areas between towns or from towns to factories or mines before the advent of bus service. On railroads, a married pair is a set of two railroad cars which are permanently coupled and treated as if they were a single unit. On passenger railroads, light rail, and monorail services, married pairs may have machinery necessary for full operation of the cars split between them. (For example, one car may contain a propulsion system, while the other contains an HVAC system.) ...more on Wikipedia about "Married pair"
The New Pendolino trains, built by ALSTOM Ferroviaria for Trenitalia and Cisalpino, represent a further development of the earlier models in order to better respond to the requirements expressed by the market and the customers of Trenitalia and Cisalpino. The innovative features concern the interior and exterior design, now closer to the customers’ brand strategy, and an improved comfort and services for passengers. Moreover, some important technical characteristics have been increased, such as the power of the “traction unit”, and the level of “redundancy” of components and equipment to achieve an ever-better level of reliability. The new trains will be produced in full accordance with the new regulations governing interoperability (for example, passive security in case of impact). ...more on Wikipedia about "New Pendolino"

A railroad car (or, more briefly, car), also known as an item of rolling stock in British parlance, is a vehicle on a railroad or railway that is not a locomotive - one that provides another purpose than purely haulage, although some types of car are powered. Cars can be coupled together into a train, either hauled by a locomotive(s) or self-propelled. ...more on Wikipedia about "Railroad car"
Railroad plough is a railroad car which supports a big plough. Four variations of the MTR rolling stock operate on the MTR Network of Hong Kong. All trains are electric multiple units (EMUs), equipped with ATC and ATP, operating on 1432 mm rail gauge and are powered by 1500 V DC through overhead electrification. Except the rolling stock of the Airport Express, all other trains are designed with features to cope with high density passenger traffic on stopping services. Examples are the latitudinal seating arrangement, additional ventilation fans and 5 doors on each side per car. MTR is the metro system in the world using the longest (~23 m), widest and highest capacity rolling stocks (~350 passengers/car), with the most number of cars making up a train (8 cars constitute 1 MTR EMU). ...more on Wikipedia about "Trains on the MTR"
Transporter wagons have seen varying popularity. They were quite common on German narrow gauge systems; a transporter wagon is a Rollwagen in German. Also common on German and eastern European narrow gauge are transporter trucks, which are small-wheeled trucks that fit beneath each pair of the wagon's wheels and are hauled by a drawbar. These are Rollböcke in German. ...more on Wikipedia about "Transporter wagon"
X2 is the high speed train system operated by SJ (Swedish Railways) under the X 2000 brand name. It has a top operating speed of 200–210 km/h, but has reached 276 km/h in a test. The reason the X2 was chosen was that the country has very curved railways, and not enough traffic to justify building special high-speed railway lines. Clearly, a tilting train like the X2 had to be developed. A tilting train provided the advantages of high speed and comfort for the passengers, as tilting trains are made for curved railways. The X2 was designed and built by ASEA, which later merged into Asea Brown Boveri and then Bombardier. The drive unit for the X2 is designated as a multiple unit although since the drive unit doesn't carry any passengers it should be considered as a locomotive. ...more on Wikipedia about "X2 train"
