The companies merged, though it was in effect a takeover by Sky to form today's British Sky Broadcasting or BSkyB. BSB shareholders Granada, Pearson and Chargeurs maintained an interest in BSkyB through BSB Holdings Limited, but gradually sold their shares throughout the 1990s. ...more on Wikipedia about "British Satellite Broadcasting"

The Digibox is a device marketed by British Sky Broadcasting in the UK to enable home users to receive digital satellite television broadcasts ( satellite receiver). An internet service is also available through the device, similar in some ways to the American MSN TV. The first Digiboxes shipped to consumers in mid- 1998, and the hardware reference design is unchanged since. The units are DVB-S compatible, and usually carry the DVB logo on the front. However, their use as a DVB-S receiver for anything other than Sky services is seriously limited by their reduced choice of symbol rates (22,000 and 27,500), and their inability to store more than about 20 non-EPG channels without losing them. ...more on Wikipedia about "Digibox (Sky Television)"

Free-to-air (FTA) is a term used to describe television and radio broadcasts which are broadcast unencrypted and may therefore be picked up via any suitable receiver. The term should not be confused with Free-to-view (FTV) which describes TV which is available without subscription but which is encoded and may therefore be restricted geographically. Neither of these options can be described as pay-TV, however, which describes a subscription (or pay-per-view) service which is encrypted. The term usually refers to delivery by satellite television, but in various parts of the world where encrypted digital terrestrial television channels exist, broadcast on UHF or VHF bands, and it can also be applied to those systems. ...more on Wikipedia about "Free-to-air"

Rain fade can be caused by rain or snow at the uplink or downlink location. It does not need to be raining at a location for it to be affected by rain fade. Satellite TV signals are broadcast from satellites in the geostationary orbits 22,000 miles above the equator. They beam TV signals towards land where the bulk of subscribers are found, so reception from land is easy to receive and requires an antenna no larger than 18 inches in diameter. However, larger antennas are required for mariners because the TV signals “bleed” out over coastal waters and the signal strength weakens the further offshore a vessel travels. Signal strength also varies from satellite service to service, where services such as DIRECTV Latin America broadcast a weaker signal than say, DISH Network. ...more on Wikipedia about "Satellite TV services and coverage area for mobile antennas"
