Exploration and satisfaction through the mental and spiritual aspects of sexual intercourse is the thesis of Imaginative Sex, John Norman's nonfiction 1974 work. As is perhaps expected, Norman's concept of the mental and spiritual involves generally male dominant/female submissive BDSM fantasy scenarios, of which the bulk of Imaginative Sex is devoted to. Unlike the Spartan Gor, where it may be natural for men to enslave women, Norman repeatedly emphasizes the need for BDSM to be safe, sane and consensual. Although a groundbreaking sex manual for its time, Norman was criticized for his parochial focus on maledom/femsub relations in addressing the wide topic of sexual spirituality. ...more on Wikipedia about "Imaginative Sex"

Kamasutram, generally known to the Western world as Kama Sutra, is an ancient Hindu text on human sexual behavior, widely considered to be the standard work on love in Sanskrit literature. The text was composed by Vatsyayana, as a brief summary of various earlier works belonging to a tradition known generically as Kama Shastra, the science of love. Kama is literally desire. Sutra signfies a thread, or discourse threaded on a series of aphorisms. Sutra was a standard term for a technical text, thus also the Yogasutram of Patanjali. The text is originally known as Vatsyayana Kamasutram ("Vatsyayana's Aphorisms on Love"). Tradition holds that the author was a celibate scholar. He is believed to have lived sometime between the 1st to 6th centuries AD, probably during the great cultural flowering of the Gupta period. ...more on Wikipedia about "Kama Sutra"

The Joy of Sex was a ground-breaking sex manual with illustrations by Alex Comfort, M.D., Ph.D. published in 1972. It was the first explicit, serious book about sex to gain wide distribution - at least in modern America (one might argue, for instance, that the Kama Sutra provided somewhat similar information over 1000 years before). Earlier works, such as the 1966 Human Sexual Response by William H. Masters & Virginia E. Johnson, were more circumspect and clinical. The original intention was to use the same mainstream approach as books such as The Joy of Cooking, hence section titles include 'starters' and 'main courses'. Conversely, The Joy of Sex is rather circumspect and clinical in comparison to The Guide to Getting it On, published 20 years later. ...more on Wikipedia about "The Joy of Sex"
