Paul de Lamerie ( 1688 - 1751) was the best-known English silversmith of his generation. Though his mark raises the market value of silver, his output was large and not all his pieces are outstanding. Lamerie's Huguenot parents had left France following the Edict of Fontainebleau ( 1685). They initially settled in the United Provinces, where Paul was born, moving to London in 1691. Paul Revere ( January 1, 1735 – May 10, 1818) was an American silversmith of French descent and a patriot in the American Revolutionary War. Immortalized after his death for his role as a messenger in the Battle of Lexington and Concord, Revere was a prosperous and well-known craftsman who was born in the class of tradesmen yet yearned to advance to the class of gentleman. He served as an officer in one of the most disastrous campaigns of the war, a role for which he was later exonerated. Porter Blanchard ( 1886- 1973) was a famous silversmith living and working in Pacoima, California in the United States. He is considered to be part of the Arts and Crafts Movement. His daughter, Alice, married Lewis Wise who conducted business as Porter Blanchard Silversmiths (Calabasas, California). After 1955, all of Porter Blanchard flatware was made at the Calabasas shop, while the holloware was made at his Pacoima home. Many of his papers including photographs of his shop are collected in the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution.
