Anti-satellite weapons (ASATs) are weapons designed to be used against artificial satellites. ...more on Wikipedia about "Anti-satellite weapon"

Asteroid deflection strategies are possible methods by which near-Earth objects approaching the Earth could be intercepted, preventing a potentially catastrophic impact event. Such an impact could cause massive tidal waves or, by placing large quantities of dust into the stratosphere blocking sunlight, cause a climate change which could bring about mass extinctions. Collisions such as these are believed to have occurred 8.3 million years ago ** , 65 million years ago causing the extinction of non-avian dinosaurs, and 370 million years ago at the end of the age of fishes (the Alamo bolide impact). ...more on Wikipedia about "Asteroid deflection strategies"

Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle (EKV) is part of Ronald Reagan's " Star Wars" missile defence concept. An orbiting vehicle is designed to detect and intercept ballistic missiles, which are destroyed in a "hit to kill" collision with the EKV. ...more on Wikipedia about "Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle"

Fractional Orbital Bombardment System (FOBS) was a Soviet ICBM in the 1960s that after launch would go into a low Earth orbit and would then de-orbit for an attack. It had no range limit and the orbital flight path would not reveal the target location. ...more on Wikipedia about "Fractional Orbital Bombardment System"

Kinetic Bombardment or Project Thor is an idea for a weapons system that launches kinetic projectiles from Earth orbit to damage targets on the ground. It is said that, at some point in history, the concept originated in a classified study for the U.S. Air Force. ...more on Wikipedia about "Kinetic bombardment"

National Missile Defense (NMD) is a military strategy that has been discussed in the United States since the 1960s. The basic idea is to shield the U.S. against incoming missiles by shooting them down as they approach the country, and its role in nuclear strategy has been a heated topic for several decades. (See also Missile Defense Agency and Anti-ballistic missile.) ...more on Wikipedia about "National Missile Defense"

Orbital bombardment is the act of attacking a planet, moon or other such object from orbit, in the sense of not being suborbital like an ICBM. It is most often encountered in fiction. ...more on Wikipedia about "Orbital bombardment"

Orbital weaponry is any weapon that is in orbit around a large body such as a planet or moon. This can include space to ground, space to air, or space to space weaponry. Currently there are no orbital weapons systems in Earth orbit. There were two treaties that were signed during the Cold War which prohibit any weapons of mass destruction from being placed into space. These are the Outer Space Treaty and the SALT II treaty. ...more on Wikipedia about "Orbital weaponry"

The Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies also known as the Outer Space Treaty (the Treaty), was opened for signature in the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union (the three depository Governments) on January 27 1967, and the Treaty entered into force on October 10, 1967. ...more on Wikipedia about "Outer Space Treaty"

On May 15 1987, an Energia rocket flew for the first time. The payload was a prototype orbital weapons platform Polyus (also known as Polus, Skif-DM or 17F19DM), the final version of which according to some reports could be armed with nuclear space mines and defensive cannon. The attempt to place the satellite into orbit failed. ...more on Wikipedia about "Polyus spacecraft"

Project Babylon was a project commissioned by the Iraqi president Saddam Hussein during the Iran-Iraq War to build a series of superguns, with Gerald Bull supplying the designs for the guns. Although the details are sketchy, it appears that there were four different devices in total included in the program. ...more on Wikipedia about "Project Babylon"

Project HARP, short for High Altitude Research Project, was a joint project of the United States Department of Defense and Canada's Department of National Defence created with the goal of studying ballistics of re-entry vehicles at low cost; whereas most such projects used expensive (and failure-prone) rockets, HARP used a very large gun to fire the models to high altitudes and speeds. Started in 1961, it was created largely due to lobbying from Gerald Bull, a controversial but highly successful ballistics engineer who went on to head the project. His ultimate goal was to fire a payload into space from a gun, and many have suggested that the ballistics study was offered up simply to gain funding. The project received just over 10 million dollars during its lifetime. ...more on Wikipedia about "Project HARP"

Rods from God are a space-based kinetic energy weapon that has been discussed since the early 1980s. ...more on Wikipedia about "Rods from God"

The Satellite Orbital Laser canon or SOL, is a fictional orbital weapon depicted in the popular anime film Akira. It is under the control of the Japanese military. When it fires, the laser beam starts out very wide and narrows down as it focuses on its target. Because of the massive power of the beam there is often a resultant explosion originating at the point of terran contact. ...more on Wikipedia about "Satellite Orbital Laser"

The Space Preservation Treaty (SPT) is a proposed international treaty to ban space weapons. The Treaty will establish a peacekeeping agency that will monitor outer space and enforce the ban on space-based weapons. Its companion, the Space Preservation Act, was introduced for the second time to the United States House of Representatives by Congressman Dennis Kucinich on December 8 2003. ...more on Wikipedia about "Space Preservation Treaty"

The Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), commonly called Star Wars after the popular science fiction series, was a system proposed by U.S. President Ronald Reagan on March 23, 1983 to use space-based systems to protect the United States from attack by strategic nuclear missiles. It was never implemented and research in the field tailed off after the end of the Cold War. ...more on Wikipedia about "Strategic Defense Initiative"
