Founded in 1979 by Bay City, Michigan boxing promoter Art Dore, the Toughman Contest pits amateur fighters (those with no more than 5 fights in the past 5 years) together in the ring in different cities across the United States and Canada. Tournaments are held in which any of the local residents of a particular city (participants must live within a 75-mile radius of where the event is to be held) who is at least 18 years of age and is willing to sign a waiver freeing Dore's promotion company from liability can participate. Though highly controversial and banned in some states, Toughman has made Art Dore a multi-millionaire. The World Professional Darts Championship is the traditional highlight of the darts calendar.
