Stealth aircraft

The McDonnell Douglas/ General Dynamics A-12 Avenger II was an American aircraft program from McDonnell Douglas/General Dynamics designed to be an all-weather, stealth attack replacement for the A-6 Intruder in the United States Navy and Marines. ...more on Wikipedia about "A-12 Avenger II"

Aurora is the popular name for a hypothesised American reconnaissance aircraft, believed by some to be capable of hypersonic flight at speeds of Mach 6-20. According to the hypothesis, the Aurora was developed in the 1980s or 1990s as a replacement for the aging and expensive SR-71 Blackbird. "Aurora" appeared below the SR-71 Blackbird and U-2 in the 1985 Pentagon budget request, thus putting the name into the public domain. No conclusive evidence supporting the existence of a hypersonic plane has ever reached the public domain. ...more on Wikipedia about "Aurora aircraft"

The B-2 Spirit, sometimes known as the B-2 Bomber, or The Boomerang, is an American multi-role stealth bomber capable of delivering both conventional and nuclear weapons. A dramatic leap forward in technology, the bomber represented a major milestone in the U.S. bomber modernization program. The B-2 is the most expensive plane built to date, costing approximately $2.2 billion USD per plane. ** Some writers have suggested that the huge program cost may actually include costs for other black projects that remain classified. The high per-unit cost may also be partially explained by the small number of planes produced coupled with a large research overhead in the B-2 program (see below). ...more on Wikipedia about "B-2 Spirit"

The Bird of Prey was a black project aircraft, intended to demonstrate stealth technology, developed by what is now a part of Boeing. Funded by the company at a price of $67 million, it was a very cost-effective program (compared to many other programs of similar scale), developing technology and materials which would later be used on Boeing's X-45 UCAV. As an internal project, this aircraft was not given an X-plane designation. ...more on Wikipedia about "Boeing Bird of Prey"

The Boeing X-45 Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle (UCAV) is a concept demonstrator for a next generation of completely autonomous fighter aircraft, developed by Boeing's Phantom Works (a Skunk Works-like division acquired through McDonnell Douglas). ...more on Wikipedia about "Boeing X-45"

The Dassault Neuron - sometimes written as nEUROn - is a French delta attack UCAV unmanned attack aircraft demonstrator currently under development by Dassault Aviation in collaboration with Swedish SAAB (claim 25% of development), Greece (HAI), Italy ( ALENIA), Spain ( EADS-CASA) and Switzerland (RUAG). A single demonstration system is being produced to explore new operational concepts linked to the use of UCAVs. ...more on Wikipedia about "Dassault Neuron"

The Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk is the world's first operational aircraft designed to use stealth technology. Flown only by the United States Air Force, it is a direct descendant of the Have Blue stealth prototype program. ...more on Wikipedia about "F-117 Nighthawk"

The F-22 Raptor is a highly maneuverable stealthy fighter aircraft built by Lockheed Martin Aeronautics and Boeing Integrated Defense Systems. It was originally envisioned as an air superiority fighter, but is equipped for ground attack, electronic attack, and signals-intelligence roles as well. ...more on Wikipedia about "F-22 Raptor"

The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) is a joint venture between the USA, United Kingdom and several partner countries, to replace the current generation of strike fighters, particularly the VSTOL AV-8 Harrier II (US), Harrier GR7/9 (UK), the Sea Harrier (UK) and the conventional A-10 Thunderbolt II, F/A-18 Hornet and the F-16 Fighting Falcon. It is to be a multirole strike fighter (a plane with a strong emphasis on close air support and tactical bombing as well as being capable of air-to-air combat) currently in development by Lockheed Martin with partners Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems. ...more on Wikipedia about "F-35 Joint Strike Fighter"

Have Blue was the code-name for Lockheed's prototype Stealth Fighter program which preceded the F-117 Nighthawk production stealth aircraft project. The Have Blue was the first airplane designed from an electrical engineering (rather than an aerodynamic) perspective. The aircraft's plate-like, faceted shape was designed to deflect electromagnetic waves, making the plane essentially invisible to radar. ...more on Wikipedia about "Lockheed Have Blue"

The Northrop Tacit Blue was a technology demonstrator aircraft created to demonstrate that a stealth low observable surveillance aircraft with a low probability of intercept radar and other sensors could operate close to the forward line of battle with a high degree of survivability. ...more on Wikipedia about "Northrop Tacit Blue"

A pulse detonation wave engine is a new form of very fast airplane jet engine which is said to be being developed in secret for use in the Aurora aircraft, probably in Area 51. The RQ-3 Dark Star unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was operated by the US Air Force. Its first flight was on March 26, 1996. The program was cancelled in 1999. ...more on Wikipedia about "RQ-3 Dark Star" Things Go Better with www.shortopedia.com.

A stealth aircraft is an aircraft which has been designed to absorb and deflect radar (via stealth technology); these are not completely "invisible" to radar, they are simply harder to detect than conventional technology. In general the goal is to allow a stealth aircraft to execute its attack while still outside the ability of the opposing system's detection. Stealth aircraft were most notably used during the Gulf War ( 1991); although stealth technology has since become less effective, the United States continues to develop stealth aircraft. ...more on Wikipedia about "Stealth aircraft"
