Tabletop game is a general term used to refer to card games, board games, parlor games, role-playing games, miniature wargames, tile-based games and other games that are normally played on a table or other flat surface. The term is used distinguish these types of games from sports and video games, which today enjoy more popularity than most tabletop games. The Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game (LoTR SBG), often referred to by players as Lord of the Rings, is a tabletop miniature wargame produced by Games Workshop, based on The Lord of the Rings films and novels. It was initially released in 2001 to tie in with the movie The Fellowship of the Ring. New box sets with updated rules were also released for The Two Towers and The Return of the King movies. Later Games Workshop also began to add content that was featured in the original novels but not in the film adaptations (e.g. Tom Bombadil, Radagast and Glorfindel) called the 'Shadow and Flame' collection. The War of the Ring was the 2005 Annual Online Summer Campaign for Games Workshop, based in the United Kingdom but open to all countries. It was launched on June 1 2005, and was the first such campaign to feature the Lord of the Rings miniature wargaming system. The Campaign was promoted in Games Workshop hobby centres worldwide, in their monthly supplement " White Dwarf", and in their fortnightly magazine " Battle Games in Middle Earth".
