Ayurveda (आयुर्वेद Sanskrit: ayu—life; veda—knowledge of) or ayurvedic medicine is a comprehensive system of medicine, more than 5,000 years old and based on a holistic approach rooted in Vedic culture. Its conspicuous use of the word veda, or knowledge, reveals its role in early Hinduism and describes its hallowed place in India. Ayurveda also had a tradition of surgery. A curandero (or curandera for a female) is a traditional folk healer or shaman prevalent in Latin America, and especially in Mexico and in Chicano communities in the southwestern United States. They are often respected members of the community, being highly religious and spiritual. Literally translating as "healer" from Spanish, curanderos often use herbs and other natural remedies to cure illnesses, but their primary method of healing is the supernatural. Hilot is an ancient Filipino art of healing. Hilots as well as arbularyos are the much cheaper alternative to medical doctors in the Philippines, especially in very deep rural areas. Hilots employ 'chiropractic' manipulation and massage for the diagnosis and treatment of musculoligamentous and musculoskeletal ailments. Hilots have been known to reset dislocated and sprained joints such as the knee, ankle, fingers and metacarpal bones. Hilots tend to be chiropractors while arbularyos tend to be herbalists. Znachor or znakhar (literally "The one who knows (illnesses)", Russian знахарь,) is the Slavic name applied to practitioners of folk medicine, akin to " shaman". The znachors were healers, herbalists, midwives, and were known as wise women and cunning men. The znachors would detect poison, and interpret dreams to detect witchcraft and counteract the evil eye and baneful spells.
