Trotskyism

Bolshevik-Leninism is another word for Trotskyism. When the battle between Leon Trotsky and Stalin erupted over the leadership and course for the Soviet Union and Communist International after Lenin’s death in 1924, Stalin referred to his political ideas as Marxism-Leninism, more commonly know as Stalinism. Trotsky decided to call his political standpoint Bolshevik-Leninism, claiming it was the true continuity of Lenin and the Bolshevik party. ...more on Wikipedia about "Bolshevik-Leninism"

In Trotskyist political theory, deformed workers' states are states where the bourgeoisie has been overthrown through social revolution, the industrial means of production have been largely nationalized, but where the working class has never held political power (as it did in Russia shortly after the Russian Revolution). These workers' states are deformed because their political and economic structures have been imposed from the top (or from outside), and because revolutionary working class organizations are crushed. Like a degenerated workers state, a deformed workers' state cannot be said to be a state that is transitioning to socialism. ...more on Wikipedia about "Deformed workers' state"

In Trotskyist political theory the term degenerated workers' state has been used since the 1930s to describe the state of the Soviet Union after Stalin's consolidation of power in or about 1924. The Soviet state of that period was held to be a workers' state because the bourgeoisie had been politically overthrown and the economic basis of that state lay in nationalized property -- the Soviet state was degenerated because the working class was politically disposessed. The ruling stratum of the Soviet Union was held to be a bureaucratic caste, and not a new ruling class. The theory that the Soviet Union was a degenerated workers' state is closely connected to Trotsky's call for a political revolution in the USSR, as well as Trotsky's call for defense of the USSR against capitalist restoration. ...more on Wikipedia about "Degenerated workers' state"

The French Turn refers to the policy advocated by Leon Trotsky as a plan of action for his followers at various stages throughout the 1930s. It was called the "French Turn" because it was first formulated in 1931 while Trotsky was in Paris. The Left Opposition was a faction within the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1923- 1927. Leon Trotsky, People's Commissar for Military and Navy Affairs (defense minister) was the de-facto leader of the Left Opposition, which was formed as part of the power struggle within the party leadership that began with the Soviet founder Vladimir Lenin's illness and intensified with his death in January 1924. Originally, the battle lines were drawn between Trotsky and his supporters who signed the The Declaration of 46 in October 1923, on the one hand, and a triumvirate (known by its Russian name troika) of Comintern chairman Grigory Zinoviev, Communist Party General Secretary Joseph Stalin and Politburo chairman Lev Kamenev on the other hand. The troika was supported by the leading party theoretician and Pravda editor Nikolai Bukharin and by Sovnarkom Chairman (prime minister) Alexei Rykov, who would later be branded the Right Opposition by Stalin. ...more on Wikipedia about "Left Opposition"

Permanent Revolution is a Marxist theory most closely associated with Leon Trotsky, devised as an explanation of how socialist revolutions could occur in societies that had not achieved advanced capitalism. The phrase was coined by Marx in 1850. The theory states that the bourgeois democratic tasks in countries with delayed bourgeois democratic development cannot be accomplished except through the establishment of a workers' state, and further, that the creation of a workers state would inevitably involve inroads against capitalist property. Thus, the accomplishment of bourgeois democratic tasks passes over into proletarian tasks, and it is in this sense that the revolution is "permanent" in that it must be "continuous" until "final" victory. ...more on Wikipedia about "Permanent Revolution"

Shachtmanism is a critical term applied to the form of Marxism associated with Max Shachtman. It has two major components: a bureaucratic collectivist analysis of the Soviet Union and a third camp approach to world politics. Shachtmanites believe that the Stalinist rulers of Communist countries are a new (ruling) class, distinct from the workers and rejects Trotsky's description of Stalinist Russia as being a " degenerated workers' state". Max Shachtman described the USSR as a " bureaucratic collectivist" society. Although Shachtmanism is usually described as a form of Trotskyism, both Trotsky and Shachtman were careful to not describe Shachtman's view as Trotskyist. ...more on Wikipedia about "Shachtmanism"
