New Elbe Tunnel ( Neuer Elbtunnel ) The tunnel with its length of 2.6 km (1.6 miles) was constructed in the 1970s with three pipes beneath the harbour, containing six Autobahn lanes. To meet the demands of increasing traffic, in 2004 a fourth pipe was completed with two more lanes. It was drilled through the ground by the world's largest tunnel boring machine (TBM), the front plate of the machine being about 48 feet in diameter.
