A grey fungus, Botrytis cinerea or Botrytis, that affects wine grapes. It is also called Botrytis bunch rot. The fungus gives rise to two different kinds of infections. The first, grey rot, is the result of consistently wet or humid conditions, and typically results in the loss of the affected bunches. The second, noble rot or Edelfäule in German, occurs when drier conditions follow wetter, and can result in distinctive sweet dessert wines, such as Sauternes. ...more on Wikipedia about "Botrytis cinerea"

Grapes are the fruit that grow on a woody grape vine. The grapevine belongs to the family Vitaceae. Grapes grow in clusters of 6 to 300, and can be black, blue, golden, green, purple-red and white. They can be eaten raw or used for making grape juice, jelly, wine, and grape seed oil. Raisins are the dried fruit of the grapevine, and the name actually comes from the French word for "grape". Wild grapevines are often considered a nuisance weed, as they cover other plants with their usually rather agressive growth. ...more on Wikipedia about "Grape"

Still, the term remains useful in understanding the history of wine. ...more on Wikipedia about "Noble grapes"

Noble rot (French: La Pourriture Noble) is the benevolent form of a grey fungus, Botrytis cinerea, affecting wine grapes. Infestation by Botrytis requires moist conditions, and if the weather stays wet, the malevolent form, grey rot, can destroy crops of grapes. Grapes infected with Botrytis when they are ripe, but then exposed to drier conditions become partially raisined, and this form of infection is known as noble rot. Picked at a certain point during infestation can produce particularly fine and concentrated sweet wine. Some of the finest Botrytized wines are literally picked berry by berry in successive tris ( French for "pickings"). ...more on Wikipedia about "Noble rot"

Grape Phylloxera (Daktulosphaira vitifoliae, family Phylloxeridae, superfamily Aphidoidea) is a serious pest of commercial grapevines worldwide, originally native to eastern North America. These tiny sap-sucking insects related to aphids attack the roots of grape vines. The insects and secondary fungal infections can girdle roots, gradually cutting off the flow of nutrients and water to the vine. Nymphs also form protective galls on the undersides of grapevine leaves and overwinter under the bark or on the vine roots; these leaf galls are not found on vines grown in California. ...more on Wikipedia about "Phylloxera"
