War novels The novel Bomber is a roman à clef written by Len Deighton and published in the UK in 1970. It is the fictionalised account of the events of June 31 (sic), 1943 in which an RAF bombing raid on the Ruhr area of western Germany goes wrong. In each chapter, the plot is advanced by seeing the progress of the day through the eyes of protagonists. The action is fast and vivid while at the same time giving much factual information in an almost documentary fashion about the preparation and delivery of a heavy bomber raid, the defence against it and its impact on the unfortunate victims. The novel is weaker when it comes to characterisation; individuals are somewhat one-dimensional stereotypes to represent differing points of view and attitudes. ...more on Wikipedia about "Bomber (novel)"

The Killer Angels ( 1974) is a historical novel by Michael Shaara that was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1975. The book tells the story of four days of the Battle of Gettysburg in the American Civil War: June 29, 1863, as the troops of both the Union and the Confederacy move into battle around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and July 1, July 2, and July 3, when the battle was fought. Each day is told from the perspective of the commanders of both armies: Robert E. Lee and James Longstreet for the Confederacy, and Joshua Chamberlain and John Buford for the Union, with each chapter describing the emotion-laden decision of these officers as they went into battle. Maps depicting the positioning of the troops as they advanced add to the sense of authenticity as decisions are made to advance and retreat with the armies. Through their voices, the author succeeds in conveying not only the excitement and horror of the largest battle in the history of North America, but also the causes of the Civil War and the motivations that led old friends to face each other on the battlefield. ...more on Wikipedia about "The Killer Angels"

Published in 1954, it is a story about the Continuation War between Finland and the Soviet Union as told from the viewpoint of ordinary Finnish soldiers. Its gritty and realistic style was in part to shatter the myth of the noble Finnish soldier, and in that it succeeded admirably. The novel is based on Linna's own experiences, but is more or less fictional. ...more on Wikipedia about "The Unknown Soldier (novel)"
